Discover the fortifications of the First World War: trekking on the Cadorna Line.

The Cadorna Line, a historical marvel, traces the footsteps of a defensive line realized during the First World War. This line, a testament to Italy’s resilience, was erected to safeguard the nation from potential invasions from Switzerland.

Today, this route, renamed the Path of Peace, which saw Italian soldiers defending the borders against attacks from Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, has become a famous trekking and hiking trail, rich in history and breathtaking views.

The Cadorna Line, primarily composed of trench or combat lines, offers a panoramic and accessible route. It’s perfect for those seeking a blend of strolls and historical-cultural exploration.

What to expect along the Cadorna Line route.

This defensive system, used by the partisans during the Resistance, was, in recent years, restored and made usable with various educational paths, equipped with illustrative panels, along an easy walk entirely in the woods and with a minimal difference in altitude, therefore suitable for everyone, experts and less experienced.

Today, the guided tour of the Cadorna Line is a walk through the Lombard woods.

It takes you back in time, investigating the history of the two World Wars but also partly making us relive the daily experience of the soldiers who remained entrenched along the defensive line and fought for Italy.

Where is the Cadorna Line located?

The Northern Frontier, or the Italian defensive system on the Northern Frontier towards Switzerland, known as the Cadorna Line, is a complex of permanent defence works placed to protect the Po Valley and its leading economic and production hubs: Turin, Milan, and Brescia.

His name explicitly refers to General Luigi Cadorna, the Chief Of Staff of the Italian Army from 1914 to 1917.

The Cadorna Line, a vast historical treasure, is conveniently close to our Hotel Loveno. This proximity allows our guests to explore this fascinating route during their stay with us.

In particular, we recommend a visit to the path in Crocetta di Menaggio, which dominates the town of Menaggio.

The Alpini of the Menaggio Group built a small church, dedicating it «To the Fallen of all wars. »

Throughout the area around the plateau and the side of the mountain that faces the lake, the Alpine troops have recovered with cleaning works and partial reconstruction of walls, trenches, walkways, control posts, and barracks.

Some areas are considered dormitories, shelters, and supply warehouses (a toilet is still visible).

Even near the Chiesetta, the Alpini, everything has been cleaned and made safe, from the walkways to the trenches, to allow a safe and pleasant visit.

It is possible to find another exciting stretch of the Cadorna Line also between Varese and Luino, facing Lake Maggiore, about two hours drive from our Hotel Loveno, along a magnificent road that overlooks three lakes, Como, Lugano, and Maggiore.

Other interesting sections of the Cadorna Line and how to get there.

Other exciting sections of the Cadorna Line are not far from our hotel. This route climbs the slopes of Monte Crocione.

To get there, you can choose between two solutions:

  • Take the car and drive to Lenno from Menaggio along State Road 340. You will arrive in just 20 minutes.

Leave the car in Narro and continue on foot or by bike; the road is well-maintained and is visited by numerous visitors throughout the year.

  • If you are an avid walker and want to enjoy a panorama that crosses picturesque Alpine villages and protected natural areas rich in flora and fauna, we recommend starting on foot from Intignano, above Tremezzo.

Going up Monte Tremezzo, through the walkway of the Monti Brente, you will pass the Bocchette di Nava, a very panoramic place that allows you to see Mount Crocione on one side while on the other side; you have a fantastic view of Lake Como and many peaks of Valsassina.

Continuing the route, you will see several remains of the Cadorna defensive line, where you can stop to enjoy the view and take photos.

Once you get up, if you are hungry, we recommend stopping at Rifugio Venini to satiate your appetite and refresh yourself, given that there are no water sources along the route.
