Velosolutions Pump Track in Menaggio: The Speed Track
Today, we would like to introduce you to a new sports feature in our area, the pump track.
A pump track is a type of cycling track designed for riding without pedaling, that is, using body movements instead of pedals.
Specifically, the downward thrust (pump) generated by the continuous up-and-down movement of the body on the bike, skateboard, or scooter generates speed.
The track consists of bumps, turns, and dips that allow cyclists to maintain speed through coordinated body movements.
This sport is rapidly spreading in Italy, along with its tracks.
Velosolutions is the Swiss company that has been at the forefront of pump track development, with over 600 tracks built worldwide, including in Italy.
This achievement is thanks to the tenacity and vision of its founder, Claudio Caluori, who states, “This sport has shown me countless places around the world, both as a professional cyclist and as a track builder. It has taught me many life lessons and how our pump tracks positively change lives in every community where we build them. From Rome in Lesotho to Aranyaprathet in Thailand, to Zurich and New York City – they get people into sports and bring people together.”
This track record of success and commitment to the sport’s development is a testament to the quality and safety of Velosolutions’ pump tracks.
However, what is a Pump Track?
A pump track is a cycling track designed and built to thrill anyone who rides it.
The most important element is undoubtedly the safety of all riders. To ensure this, we recommend wearing a helmet, knee and elbow pads, and other protective gear. These measures are crucial for your safety and enjoyment of the sport.
The history of pump tracks dates back to the spread of BMX (Bicycle Motocross, a cycling discipline that originated in the USA in 1968) and the courses dedicated to this particular type of bicycle, starting in the ’70s and ’80s, closely connected to the world of skateboarding and skateparks. Since then, pump tracks have evolved into a unique sport, attracting riders of all ages and skill levels, and gaining popularity worldwide.
The first asphalt pump track was built in 2012 in Chur, Switzerland, by Velosolutions. It spans a 220-meter linear path for a total of 800 sqm.
In Italy, over 50 pump tracks are distributed across the country.
Let’s see how a pump track is composed:
– Bumps and dips: These are the main elements of the track that help generate speed.
– Banked turns: Raised curves that allow for maintaining and increasing speed safely.
– Surface: It can be asphalt, hard-packed dirt, or synthetic materials, depending on the type and intended use of the track.
With its uneven and adventurous tracks, the pump track is used by cyclists of all ages and skill levels and is ideal for mountain bikes, BMX, skateboards, scooters, and even inline skates.
Additionally, it is an excellent training ground for improving balance, coordination, and riding technique.

Local heroes can challenge Olympic BMX riders, MTB world champions, national champions, and some of the top talents in the freestyle community.
Another international event that has also taken place in Italy is the “Red Bull Pump Track World Championship.”
Pump Track: not just a sport, but much more
The increasing number of pump tracks is due to the growing interest in this sport.
Regardless of age or gender, this sport truly engages everyone, fostering a sense of inclusivity and community.
What are its benefits?
– Skill Development: Helps improve technical skills without constantly pedaling.
– Physical Training: It’s a great physical workout that engages many muscles.
